Granny Smith Waldorf Salad, Classic Apple Pie And Apple Sauce Recipes





The Granny Smith apple is just one of about 7,500 varieties of apples. Despite the competition, it manages to be one of the most popular types of apple in the world. The smooth, green skin protects the tart and juicy flesh of the apple. Granny Smith apples first arrived on the culinary scene in 1868 in Sydney, Australia where they were grown by Mrs. Mary Ann (Granny) Smith. Granny Smith apples are healthy and versatile which makes them an excellent ingredient.





Eating an apple out of hand is a nutritious, portable snack. A medium Granny Smith apple provides 5 grams of filling fiber, 20% of your daily vitamin C needs and antioxidants all at just about 60 calories. The fiber helps you feel full for longer than other snacks while barely making a dent in your daily calorie allowance. Apples aren't just for those trying to whittle their middle. Their have been countless studies showing the health benefits of eating apples including cutting your risks of developing lung and colon cancers. Apples are undeniably healthy but eating them as is can get boring. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to enjoy them.





While apples are probably best known for providing the filling for a pie, they are a multifaceted ingredient. They can be used in muffins and breads, coated in caramel, as an apple sauce, juiced or tossed in a salad. They can even be sliced and frozen. How ever you prepare them, try to keep the skin on because the skin is the main contributor of the nutrition benefits. Broaden your horizons and head to the grocery store to stock up on Granny Smith apples. Choose a firm apple with no soft spots unless you intend to cook with it. In that case, choose one that is a bit more ripe but still not soft. Now that we have our apples, let's turn them into delicious meals.





Classic Apple Pie Recipes





Ingredients:





• * Two 9 in. pie crusts


• * 3 tbsp all purpose flour


• * 1/4 cup apple juice


• * 1/2 cup sugar


• * 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed


• * 8 Granny Smith apples, cored and sliced about 1/4 in. thick





Directions:





1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Form a paste by mixing the flour with the melted butter in a saucepan. Add the juice, brown and white sugar and allow it to come to a boil. Then reduce the heat and let it simmer.





2. Dump the apples into the saucepan and coat the apples. Pour the apples over the bottom pie crust in a pie dish, reserving about ผ cup of the liquid. Cover the apples with the top pastry crust either using a lattice work effect or cutting slits in the crust. Using a pastry brush, coat the crust with the remaining saucepan liquid.





3. Bake for 15 min then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees and continue baking for 30-40 min, until the apples are soft and the crust is golden.





Waldorf Salad Recipes





Ingredients:





• * 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and cubed


• * 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts


• * 1/2 cup of seedless grapes, sliced in half


• * 1/2 cup celery sliced thinly on a bias


• * 3 tbsp mayonnaise


• * 1 tbsp lemon juice, preferably fresh


• * Romaine lettuce


• * Salt and pepper to taste





Toss the ingredients in a large bowl and pour over a bed of lettuce. It can also be enjoyed as an entrรฉe with the addition of a protein such as hard boiled eggs or chicken.





Apple Sauce Recipes





Ingredients:





• * 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cubed


• * 3 Fuji apples peeled, cored and cubed


• * 1 cup of unfiltered apple juice


• * 2 tbsp unsalted butter


• * 4 tbsp honey


• * 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon





Combine all the ingredients in a microwave safe container with a lid. Leave a corner of the lid unsealed to allow the steam to escape. Microwave on high for 10 min. Carefully remove the lid as the steam will be hot. Blend into a sauce using a stick blender. Serve hot over pork chops or cool and store in the refrigerator for later use.
